We absolutely create our own suffering!! We create it by making our satisfaction, contentment, or happiness, whatever you want to call it, conditional upon life meeting our expectations. We set up our thought patterns to register negative emotions whenever something is not going the way we want it. We stub our toe, we burn our toast, we lose $5, we gain 5 pounds, he/she didn't respond they I wanted, he/she NEVER responds the way I want... we get so habitual with our unhappy emotional responses, that we begin to see the negative side of every situation. Rather than relief and gratitude for not being hit by an errant motorist, it is "that Idiot almost hit me!" And then we string all of these negative emotions together and we begin to hate life because it is just one huge downer. Yes, we definitely cause our own suffering.

Yes indeed; I absolutely believe that we as individuals often create our own suffering. For me, this most often occurs when I don't take time to nurture my emotional well-being which inevitably leads to living a life filled with anxiety and fear. Thank you Karen, for the reminder that we are responsible for creating our own happiness :)
